Chairman of the Tourism Symposium Steering Group, David Curtis-Brignell looks ahead on what is in store when the two day event kicks off in Liverpool next month on the role of tourism and culture in creating economic success
This important two-day Symposium will look at the role of tourism and culture in promoting economic success.
The Study Tour on Day 1 (2 June) will be an opportunity to see at first-hand how Liverpool has been transformed over the years through the connection of tourism and local culture, from both the river and land, before delegates reconvene in the evening for an informal reception and supper at Tate Liverpool.
Day 2 (June 3rd) will consist of a full-day symposium with more than 15 speakers from tourism, arts and cultural organisations looking at the potential for cultural events to have a real and lasting impact on destinations’ fortunes in a mix of interviews, panel discussions and presentations.
A real highlight of the day will be the keynote address delivered by John Kampfner, Director of the Creative Industries Federation. In the opening session, the Tourism Society will present a paper that will evaluate the appeal and potential of cultural tourism and the various initiatives that have been taken to develop and market new and improved tourism products, summarising examples of new and best practice. Local performers will enliven the tea and lunch breaks during the day.
The audience will consist of senior professionals across the arts, tourism and cultural sectors representing a wide variety of aspects, from consultants, destination managers and attraction managers to representation companies, museum and gallery managers, event organisers, theatre operators and promoters… in short anyone responsible for creating, promoting, developing, funding, marketing, booking or reporting on cultural events and tourism strategies.
Organised by the Tourism Society with support from patrons DCMS, VisitBritain, VisitEngland, Arts Council England and Marketing Liverpool, this will be a key event during the International Festival for Business.
