World Heart Beat Music blogs for #LocalCharitiesDay 2017

World Heart Beat Music Academy is a ground-breaking organisation that accelerates social change and transforms lives through music in London.

Many of our students come from a range of challenging backgrounds. Some are the main carer for parents or siblings; some come from households with a history of drug addiction and alcohol abuse; some are classified as not in education, employment or training (NEET); and many are recent migrants and refugees that have moved to the UK without their parents.

Some of the issues these backgrounds can cause range from difficulties engaging at school to finding employment when they are older.

Changing lives

Our ethos is grounded in social change. We inspire and motivate young people to reach beyond the limits that their circumstances have placed on them. We teach skills that enable our students to lift their aspirations and maximise their potential, both as musicians and citizens of the world. Our programmes are specifically focussed on social cohesion, diminishing isolation and creating opportunities for young people to engage. We remove the barriers of disadvantage and promote positive, inspirational and a safe, stable environment to learn in.

“You can see the difference between those who have music and those who don’t. We have somewhere to go, something to aim for – we have music.”

Isabella – World heart Beat Music Academy.

There are no auditions, and anyone willing to learn can participate in our programmes. We provide instruments and free music tuition to young disadvantaged people who often miss out on the music education they deserve. We aim to equip people with a range of valuable skills to raise aspirations and help transform their lives.

There is plenty of evidence that children who study music become more resilient and happier adults. The ability of music to tap into the emotional, intellectual and physical aspect develops a young person to be confident, communicative, cohesive and cognitive.

“If it wasn’t for playing music, I wouldn’t be alive. I used to carry a knife, but music changed all that. Playing an instrument is my protection now.”

Carlos -World Heart Beat Music Academy Student.

Your support

Through generous donations, World Heart Beat funds over half of our students through comprehensive bursaries and low cost tuition. Because of our supporters, we can bring the transformative power of music to children and young people across London and help make their dreams a reality.

Our students engage in a culturally immersive teaching programme, taught by professional musicians. Our excellence has been recognised in many ways, with over 79% of all students gaining merits and/or distinctions in their music exams, and students gaining scholarships to the Royal Academy of Music, Berklee College of Music, as well as securing places at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Trinity Laban, Royal Welsh Conservatoire, Northern College of Music, GSA, Oxford and Cambridge.

We’re supporting Local Charities Day this year to celebrate the vital work of all small, local charities like ours across the UK and I’d encourage everyone reading this to do the same on 15 December, by sharing your messages of support on social media and celebrating your fantastic work.
