#MediaLiteracyStrategy
Everyone should be able to use the internet safely.
The publication of the Online Media Literacy Strategy and the first annual Online Media Literacy Action Plan sets out the Government’s plan to empower internet users with media literacy skills and knowledge to improve their online capabilities.
The UK already has a rich landscape of businesses, civil society and other organisations helping users manage their online safety. Through the publication of the Online Media Literacy Strategy, the Government will build on this excellent work by supporting organisations to undertake media literacy activity in a more coordinated, wide-reaching, and effective way.
Our ambition is to empower citizens to make more informed and safer decisions online, and to make the internet a safe space for everyone.
This toolkit includes digital assets, example social media posts and newsletter copy for organisations to share across their channels to support and showcase the resources available to people to help empower them to stay safe online.

About The Media Literacy Strategy
- The Online Media Literacy Strategy and accompanying Action Plan will set out the Government’s plan to improve media literacy capabilities. The UK already has a rich Media Literacy Sector with over 170 organisations delivering media literacy activity.
- The Strategy’s primary objective is to support those existing organisations to deliver media literacy activity in a more coordinated, wide-reaching and effective way by reducing barriers and creating opportunities.
- The Strategy is inclusive for all, with an amplified focus on people who are vulnerable online and those disproportionately targeted by online abuse.
- The Action Plan announces a number of initiatives that will deliver the objectives set out in the Strategy. This is the first year of a multi-year programme of work, and future action plans will be published in the future.
Action Plan Next Steps
- The Media Literacy Action Plan sets out 8 Government funded or led initiatives which are going to be implemented over this Financial Year (2021/22). Government is going to issue quarterly updates about the progress of delivering the Action Plan.
